When I heard Zula Bar was opening in Hartford, I was curious what kind of an establishment it would be. It wasn’t long before I got the chance to check it out for a late lunch.
Spying a Connecticut Shellfish Company truck parked outside, I couldn’t help reflecting on what a hellacious winter it has been for people in the delivery business.
My companion and I were greeted at the door,
and then shown to a tall table by the window.
Through the windows, we looked out upon City Steam
and Dish Bar & Grill,
where I recently grabbed a late bite after a UConn-Syracuse men’s basketball game.
We touched base with old buddy Chip, a blur in passing,
who has worked in restaurants throughout much of the state. We looked over the New American menu
and wine list,
then placed our order. I had a beer, but my companion abstained.
He began with a bowl of French onion soup,
while I had a chili-like black bean, spinach and chorizo soup.
I also tried a pear, pecan and Gorgonzola salad.
For our main dishes, my companion had the scallops,
while I had cavatelli Bolognese.
After so much food, we were too stuffed to consider dessert.
Our lunch finished and the place now quiet, we looked around a bit. Here you see a section of the bar,
and here some ladies enjoying a leisurely bite.
Here are a couple of other views of the joint, which will feature live music and entertainment much of the week.
I finish with a photo of Zula Bar & Restaurant’s friendly owner.

I have not been at your establishment yet but I plan to go. I hear that you are going to have entertainment. Has that started yet?
What type of music will you provide?
Thank you,
Lance
That’s the same owner of the old gyro place down the street which closed down. I used to enjoy lunches there until it got warmer and i noticed they would leave the front door open for [insects] to just come in… I never went back, Dish across the street is a great place though and so is City Steam. I’d say DIsh is probably the best choice on that corner.
Nice photo montage of the place! I was there last weekend and had a very fun time. There was a Live band, and it was comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff, great food to boot.
