Kumo Hibachi Steakhouse in New Haven is the middle of three sibling restaurants that include the original Kumo in Hamden and the most recent one in Stamford.
For those who haven’t visited the former Polo, Kumo is an extremely attractive restaurant. While a steady stream of customers seems to elect carryout,
for those who stay there are several appealing dining areas.
A close view finds people really enjoying their Kumo dining experience.
My wife and I elected the hibachi option and were seated at a table with a group of three men. But even if you’re getting the hibachi, you’re welcome to order items from the regular menu as well. So from the sushi bar,
we ordered a simple tasty avocado roll,
which we enjoyed with low-sodium soy sauce (green bottle).
We also ordered a couple of Sapporo beers which, against all expert advice, we preferred to drink from the bottle.
A waiter brought us our choice of clear soup
or fresh salad.
Then a hibachi chef wheeled a cart out to our table, and began performing the standard fun tricks like catching an egg on a spatula
and creating a big roaring flame.
He put out mustard and ginger dipping sauces for each diner.
He started preparing people’s choice of fried rice
or fried noodles.
The preparation of the cooked vegetables included the making of a flaming volcano.
Then it was time for the proteins.
Everyone got a little treat of two shrimp,
but my wife got much more
because she actually picked shrimp as one of her two proteins, along with chicken.
I, on the other hand, got steak
and salmon, both of which they got a perfect medium rare, as I asked.
It was great fun, great food and we were stuffed. Is this not the face of someone who had a great dining experience?
