New Haven’s Chinese restaurant scene has been on the upswing of late. In addition to Royal Palace on Ninth Square and House of Chao in Westville, both of which have their advocates, more recently Elm City residents have gained Great Wall Restaurant and Chao Restaurant & Wine Bar on the same block of Whitney Avenue and Taste of China on the Green on Chapel Street (whose original sibling is in Clinton).
One recent weekend day, our dear friends Bill & Mona invited us to New Haven for dim sum at Great Wall Restaurant.
We hadn’t tried Great Wall’s dim sum then, but like its many enthusiastic customers,
we had already grown to like the restaurant for its many cheap, tasty, authentic Chinese offerings, including hot tea,
hot and sour soup,
scallion pancakes,
honey roast pork
and roast duck on rice.
When we arrived for weekend dim sum, the restaurant was packed.
Bill & Mona had already secured a table for the six of us.
Signs of dim sum were everywhere.
Even Great Wall’s owner was bringing dishes around to the tables.
Everyone was selecting the treats that appealed to them and chowing down.
So let’s take a look at some of the dim sum (and other) treats we enjoyed. We had crunchy pork,
tasty noodles,
refreshing greens in garlic,
spectacularly soft and flavorful chicken feet,
soft shrimp rice rolls,
and interestingly textured turnip cakes, a personal favorite.
Two fabulous main dishes that we ordered included ginger lobster
and steamed whole fish.
We finished with a touch of sweet, namely, sesame balls filled with mung bean paste (a favorite in my wife’s homeland as well, thanks to its large immigrant Chinese population).
We thanked our hosts Bill & Mona for a fabulous culinary adventure.
