Gifford’s Offers Imaginative Fare To The Good Folk Of Kent

James Neunzig and Michael Moriarty, the folks behind J.P. Gifford Market & Catering Company in Kent, decided to open a New American restaurant called Gifford’s,

prompting us to take a bite of the old apple.

Once inside, we loved the cute little bar.

There was a nice fire “burning” in the fireplace.

065aa

We were seated in this attractive room

049aa

with these good people for neighbors.

048bb

We got a kick out of the floating candle on our table.

044bb

Slices of good bread

036bb

were accompanied by a triangle of butter served in a pool of olive oil.

038aa

We ordered a glass of Chardonnay

035bb

for the lady and a bottle of Spanish red wine

037bb

039bb

for the gentlemen.

Soon we were dining in earnest. For starters, we relished crisp, flash-fried oysters with ginger-and-Thai-basil aïoli,

045bb

spicy, pan-roasted shrimp with saffron aïoli,

046bb

and French onion soup.

047bb

For our second course, we paired a prosciutto, dried white fig and Gorgonzola pizza

051bb

with a Caesar salad.

052bb

For our main course, we enjoyed chicken Madeira,

057bb

grilled prime New York strip steak,

054bb

and one of my favorite fish—skate.

056bb

And finally for dessert, we sipped cappuccinos

059bb

and savored ice cream pie,

060bb

cheesecake,

061bb

and bread pudding.

063bb

I finish with a look at the wine list

041bb

and menu

040bb

while assuring readers: this place is not for the birds.
