A Taste Of Hartford Visit To Morton’s Steakhouse

I was pleased to see Morton’s Steakhouse participating in the Taste of Hartford again after a brief absence. So pleased I paid it two visits, one purely for pleasure on the first night of the promotion and one (sigh) for work.

I found a space at the top of Gold Street, thereby bypassing the helpful valets. Yeah, I’m a cheapskate. What’s the point of getting a great meal price if you give it back on parking? So a short two-block walk and my companion and I arrived at Morton’s.

There wasn’t an unoccupied table in the house.

We short-circuited the impressive presentation for which Morton’s is known because we were limiting ourselves to the Taste of Hartford menu.

If the kitchen was fazed by the full house, it didn’t show.

The executive chef appeared as composed as his staff.

Managers

and captains were as self-assured as they were helpful.

Marked by attention to every detail, Morton’s service is always among the very best.

Of course, the real test is the food, one that Morton’s passed with flying colors. We began with that addictive onion bread

and a square of good butter.

Taste of Hartford diners had a choice of salads, both wonderfully fresh and generous enough for two people. One was a Caesar salad,

the other the Morton’s salad, which included chopped egg, anchovies and blue cheese dressing.

We were already starting to fill up, but we dug deep. For sides, we had a choice of mashed potatoes

or sautéed garlic green beans.

We got one of each and shared them.

There were three entrée choices. On the first of my two visits, I tried my wife’s broiled salmon fillet with chef’s beurre blanc sauce, so I knew it was terrific. This time, I just snagged a photo of one as it came off the pass.

My companion elected the chicken Christopher, beautifully breaded breast meat in a garlic beurre blanc sauce.

I couldn’t resist the single-cut filet mignon,

which came with Béarnaise sauce,

a stunning savings as the centerpiece of a $20.10 meal. The grand finale was the irresistible double chocolate mousse.

Good thing we had parked a couple of blocks away, because we needed the walk.
