The Difference An Apostrophe Makes: From Le’s Vietnamese In East Hartford To Les’ Dairy Bar In Meriden

I live in the New Haven area but I venture all across Connecticut for good food. One of my favorite inexpensive dining places is Le’s Vietnamese (980 Main Street, East Hartford, 860-528-4100),

which is owned by Hue Kim Depeau and her husband Bruce.

The décor is simple,

but includes nice statuary in the front window.

Each table is stocked with the utensils and condiments of Vietnamese dining.

Both the spring rolls

and summer rolls

are wonderful, as is the egg pancake

with tofu and vegetables.

063bb

There are several delicious phos,

064bb

which come with their own accoutrements.

065aa

We also love this marinated pork dish,

these “meatballs” over vermicelli,

and this beef with lemongrass.

Each time I have visited, Hue has brought out a piece of chocolate

or vanilla cake

at the end of the meal. Hue to go!

Not every restaurant offers an irresistible dessert, however. Frequently, on my way back south after an otherwise-satisfying meal, I’ll stop in at Les’ Dairy Bar on the corner of East Main Street and Murray Street,

073aa

a Meriden fixture since 1950 and a quick off-and-on-again from either 1-91 or the Wilbur Cross Parkway. The staff is always friendly,

075aa

the ice cream treats hard to resist.

Les’ is inexpensive but cash only, so make sure you bring some.
