A restaurant coupon led my friend and me to try out Fresco in West Haven. Honestly, our expectations for this Mexican restaurant weren’t high, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise.
The joint could hardly have been more welcoming
or its management
and staff sunnier.
The cheerful ambiance
couldn’t help but rub off on Fresco’s customers.
Specials, which of course suggest freshness, were posted on both blackboard
and a specials menu.
There were all kinds of colorful drink options, like this Tequila flight,
but we were in the groove with a Dos Equis amber.
Some chips
and really good salsa
kept us busy till our food order arrived.
Fresco’s owners were inspired by the street foods of Mexico, and it showed in offerings like the parade peanuts,
the Mexico City corn,
and the various street cart taco combinations customers can create.
Forget Taco Bell—this is how tacos are supposed to look!
Entrées also pleased. A stuffed pork chop was delicious and filling,
as was the steak arrachera.
Sides included rice and beans
and mixed vegetables.
We somehow found room for dessert, including this individual cake called a chocolate hermosa
and a terrific flan.
We took the opportunity to let the chefs
know how impressed we were and to thank the woman
responsible for making the most authentic tortilla dough around.
This is what Mexican cooking should look like!
